Hanoi (VNA) – The central coastal province of Binh
Thuan will host the second Vietnam International Photography Festival 2023,
according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The festival is part of a project on building and promoting the
national brand for Vietnam’s photography in the period of 2020 – 2030.

It also aims to promote beautiful images of the country and
people of Vietnam and strengthen international exchanges through photography-related activities.

The second “Vietnam International Photography
Festival” is expected to diversify the activities of the Visiting Vietnam
Year 2023 – Binh Thuan and collect photos to promote the province’s tourism.

The first festival held in 2021, hosted by the northern province of Ninh
Binh, received 1,567 entries from 98 professional and amateur photographers from
19 countries and territories.

Of the entries, 177 photos by 93 participants were selected to
display at the photo exhibition “Vietnam through the lens of international
photographers”, which took place in Ninh Binh City.

The exhibited photos vividly reflect the reality of
life, and the beauty of the country, people, and the culture of Vietnam./.

Point Reyes hike shows nature’s constant transformations

In the early aughties, we often took our two older children — toddlers back then — on the Bear Valley Trail in Point Reyes. On a couple of occasions when (nap)time allowed, we went as far as Arch Rock. That’s not possible today because in 2015, a few days after fissures were reported on top of the rock, it collapsed, killing one person and severely injuring another. The spur trail to that area is closed, and the coast has been recontoured afresh after the collapse.

Nature’s toolkit of fire, water and wind constantly remodels the lands we’re privileged to enjoy, as a recent visit to the Bear Valley area reminded us. This time, we were hiking with the same two children — now in their 20s — and a more recent addition who’s now a teen. Our journey began at the Bear Valley trailhead, but at Divide Meadow, we took a right onto the much-less-used Old Pine Trail and began a gentle but persistent two-mile upward climb.

The bomb cyclones and atmospheric rivers of winter and early spring had toppled aged giants and created swampy areas and transient streams along the path. We occasionally picked our way through sucking mud, and over and through multiple trees slumped across the trail. Wind took the trees and the rains muddied the trails, and we dealt with the changes by taking them head on —the park service asks that hikers not create new trails around obstacles.

From Old Pine Trail, a turn south (left) onto Sky Trail also took us through older signs of nature’s ongoing remodel. In August 2020, the Woodward Fire blasted across these ridges and valleys, torching the trees coal black, leaving a still-lingering acrid smell of crisped carbon almost three years later. It could be an eerie experience, walking through a forest of ghost trees, charred and scarred — and occasionally toppled by the wind.

But part of nature’s toolkit is new life and growth. The day of our hike was a gem of a Northern California Sunday. In the clear, soft blue-sky afternoon, welcome sunlight fell gently over a profusion of fresh green life thriving beneath the scorched trees. The rains of winter have brought out the ferns, flowers and conifer seedlings emerging next to the ruins of their parent plants. Purple lupin and golden poppies are blooming, along with forget-me-nots, chaparral currant, red elderberry, tansyleaf suncup, Douglas iris, harlequin flower and western blue-eyed grass.

At one point along the trial, the park service has a request of visitors. In its effort to capture the ongoing changes after the Woodward Fire, rangers have set up a stop on this route for trail users to record how it looks. A sign instructs users to place their phone horizontally in the space provided and snap a photo of the landscape. Images can then be emailed to an address on the sign so that the park service can track how the landscape responds to fire.

We duly took and sent in our photo, and we can even check the evolution of the post-fire recovery on a related website. The visual record indeed confirms the ongoing greening and resilience of the burn area.

As we reached the intersection of Sky Trail and the Coast Trail fire road, we had another reminder that the nature of nature is change. A favorite side-trip has been taking the stairs down to Kelham Beach. But the bottom 12 feet of steps have fallen victim to the forces of erosion. The park service warns that “if you descend onto the beach, you may not be able to get back up.” We like beaches, but not enough to take that particular risk.

Heading back to where the Coastal Trail connects with Bear Valley, we paused at the now-closed turnoff to Arch Rock. We are pretty sure we spotted a couple of whales spouting and breaching in the distance as we picked out the Farallones on the horizon.

A break at Divide Meadow to commune with some old tree friends also delivered the delightful sight of a bobcat on the hunt. In our decades of visiting what we all agree is our favorite Marin locale, we’ve had the great privilege and pleasure to witness these acts of nature, big and small, and take in the transformations and resilience of this most beautiful of places.

• Getting there: The trailhead for Bear Valley Trail is at the Point Reyes Visitor Station, off of Bear Valley Road. Our hike covered 11 miles, starting at the trailhead, with a right onto Old Pine Trail, then the left fork of Sky Trail to another left onto the Coastal Trail and return by Bear Valley Trail. The first two miles on Old Pine Trail are a gentle upward grade, and after that, the trails are mostly flat. Old Pine Trail and Sky Trail are both single tracks with encroaching greenery, some of it poison oak, so be careful. Dogs are not allowed.

ARN wins two major state awards; Erdrich dominates in photo categories

The Abilene Reporter-News scored awards in two major local news coverage categories and photojournalist Ronald Erdrich won six awards, including Star Photojournalist of the Year, in the annual Texas Associated Press Managing Editors contest.

Awards were for 2022 and announced this weekend at the organization’s annual meeting Galveston.

Based on Sunday circulation, Abilene now competes in Class 1A.

The Reporter-News took second place in community service for its coverage of the national abortion issue that came to bear here as an effort to declare Abilene a “sanctuary city for the unborn.” The effort to bring forth an ordinance gained traction in the spring and ended with a winning vote in November, with ordinance leader Scott Beard then announcing his bid for City Council.

The newspaper was third in team effort for its coverage through the year of LGBTQ events and challenges in the community. Those ranged from the city’s first Pride Parade to efforts by some to determine what books were appropriate in the public libraries.

Reporter Brian Bethel, Editor Greg Jaklewicz and Erdrich were central in coverage of those two major newsmakers last year.

The Reporter-News continued its recent excellence in these top categories. The ARN was first in community service in both 2020 and 2021, both years for its coverage of the city’s Black community and how the city dealt with racial issues and opportunities.

The judge said of Erdrich’s Star Photojournalist of the Year entry, “Good selection and variety. Nice moments. Good emotion. Good job.”

In addition, Erdrich took first and second place in news photography. His winning photo was a shot during one of two fires that destroyed what was left of the former St. Ann’s Hospital in north-central Abilene.

“A beautiful photo and moment that captures humanity’s delicate relationship with nature. Really nice compositionthat offers a unique perspective of a regularly-occurring breaking news topic. The matching pattern of theburning pieces and the fire ladder & water make for a particularly compelling visual congruence and juxtaposition,” the judge said of Erdrich’s first photo.

He was third in photojournalism.

Erdrich received two honorable mention awards, for features and sports photography.

Jaklewicz also picked up several individual awards.

He was second in Star Opinion Writer of the Year, third in opinion writing and received an honorable mention for headline writing.

And honorable mention went to Dylanne Weese for her Sunday Page 1 designs.

Astro-photographer captures Goldfields skies | The West Australian

An astro-photographer who captures the Goldfields skies has encouraged locals to appreciate the local starry nights.

Astro-photographer Graham Conaty said he did not think people realised how lucky they were to observe the skies in Western Australia — particularly not in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

“It’s estimated that around three quarters of the world’s population have never seen the Milky Way with the naked eye and yet, you can walk out into your backyard in Kalgoorlie and make out that faint dust cloud of the Milky Way,” he said.

“You can very easily go into a lot of locations in and around Kalgoorlie where you can see almost make out with your naked eye the cloud of the Milky Way.

“You can point your camera up there, take an image for 20 or 30 seconds and the level of detail you’ll see and the formation of the Milky Way cloud on the back of the camera will be pretty instant.”

Starting his photography career as a sports photographer in 2014, Conaty said demand dried up during the COVID-19 period as no sports were being played.

“I’ve always done a lot of sort of landscape, nightscape and Milky Way in Kalgoorlie during that time, and I thought I’d pick up a telescope — if I can’t travel, then I’ll put my camera on the back of the telescope and just shoot some images from the backyard,” he said.

“So that’s kind of how it started with an intention of just attaching a DSLR to the back of the telescope.

“I very quickly ended up with a full dedicated astrophotography setup with a dedicated camera which has got a cool sensor and narrowband filters and things like that, so I just started off capturing sort of deep-sky nebula from the backyard and then moved into their using remote telescopes.”

Conaty explained each picture was a project which took him several weeks to produce using hydrogen, sulphur and oxygen filters.

“The more time you spend, the more integration time that you get on an image, the more colour and the more detail you get out of it and then the less noise so the less grain you get out of it as well,” he said.

“I will usually enter into the software, the type that I want to want to shoot so in this case, the Statue of Liberty nebula. That then automatically calculates the coordinates of where that’s located in the sky and it’ll give me the best sort of time to shoot that based on how high above the horizon that target is going to be.

“Because I use dedicated astrophotography mounts, the laptop sends those coordinates to the mount and then that automatically moves the telescope into the right position.”

He noted each picture was shot in black and white, before being assigned a colour to produce a coloured image.

“A lot of these —99 per cent, if not 100 per cent — of these images are completely invisible to the naked eye and that’s because there is very specific bandwidths of lights that allow those sort of details to be visible,” he said.

“By using dedicated filters, it blocks out a lot of that light and really sort of allows the specific wavelengths to come through to the camera. That’s what shows the details.

“If I photograph in hydrogen, so what you typically find is a lot of the red colours that you’ll see in nebula in the sky, are typical of hydrogen.”

He said astrophotography could be as expensive or cheap as people wanted it to be, with phones now able to capture stars with dedicated nightscape modes.

Abstract photography exhibition opens in Taipei

A photography exhibition featuring 99 abstract works by 25 Taiwanese photographers has opened at the National Center of Photography and Images in Taipei.

“The Eye of Abstraction” exhibition aims to establish a new framework for the genre, which has been dominated in Taiwan by photojournalism and documentary photography, exhibition curator Chang Kuan-ho (章光和) said at the its opening on Wednesday.

The exhibition is shown in four sections: “Figurative and Non-Figurative,” “Sense and Sensibility,” “Gestalt” and “Material Mediums.”

The first features works by photographers presenting “unexpected beauty” in everyday life captured at unique angles, Chang said.

The second juxtaposes works by renowned Taiwanese abstract painters and photographers, and asks viewers to compare the two art forms, Chang said.

The third presents photography that explores Gestalt psychology, proposed by psychologist Max Wertheimer in 1912.

The theory holds that when people see images they do not understand, they spontaneously appeal to the laws of symmetry, closure, continuity, proximity, similarity and figure-ground organization, he said.

Chang’s “Botany 0.5” on display at the exhibition is one such example.

The images were created by scanning sections of plants and compiling them in computer software to create horizontal and vertical images in a kaleidoscopic effect, Chang said.

The fourth section focuses on materials and mediums used in photography, and explores their intrinsic beauty, he said.

National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts Director Liao Jen-I (廖仁義) said the museum established the center in April 2021.

However, the vision of Taiwanese photographers more than a decade ago to establish a local museum of photography and images has not been realized, Liao said.

The boundless creativity demonstrated by Taiwanese photographers shows that they deserve a museum dedicated to photography, he said, calling on Deputy Minister of Culture Sue Wang (王時思) to lobby for funding from the Ministry of Culture to make such a museum a reality.

The large output of Taiwanese photographers necessitate the establishment of a venue larger than the center, Wang said.

The creation of a museum of photography and images is a high priority for Minister of Culture Shih Che (史哲) and herself, she said, adding that she hopes the goal can be achieved quickly.

The exhibition is free and runs until July 30.

Book Review: ‘The Beauty of Ukraine,’ by Yevhen Samuchenko and Lucia Bondar

In February 2022, the editorial staff at C.P. Publishing in Kyiv was hard at work on THE BEAUTY OF UKRAINE (TENEUES, $70), a book of landscape photography by the Odesa-born Yevhen Samuchenko, when Russian forces invaded the Ukrainian capital and forced them to flee.

Although the book survived, much of the breathtaking natural world it captures has not. “Many places featured in this book have been severely damaged during the war since its outbreak,” Lucia Bondar, C.P.’s publisher, writes in her foreword. In addition to the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian lives lost, she adds, “nature has also suffered from this brutal and senseless war.”

From the pink salt lakes in the Kherson region — their vibrant color resulting from the beta-carotene produced when the sun hits the algae beneath the water’s surface — to the white rocks in the Mykolaiv region, from the Odesa region’s pointillist red poppy fields to the Chernivtsi region’s imposing stone castles, Samuchenko’s images reveal a startling breadth of visual registers. Capturing mostly unpopulated scenes, his camera somehow imparts a fuller understanding of a nation’s humanity.

When his native city came under missile attacks, Samuchenko donated the drone he used to take many of these aerial photographs to the Ukrainian military. Such beauty, like life itself, is always fleeting, but it “now seems more fragile than ever.”
